about

Flying at the speed of sound while time stands still as a single sine wave cycle stretches to 30 minutes. Sculpting Electric features live in-studio recordings with the Buchla 200e and 200 series and other modular systems. Painstakingly prepared performance-oriented patches patiently percolate and perpetuate. Constrained electrical cycles and generative systems allow the performer to stand back as these machines unfold at their own pace. Unlike many of my live modular performances, where studio techniques are deployed as a musical instrument, these works are not looped nor layered. Instead hours are spent in preproduction building complex patches with the intent to explore deep textures and structures live. The recording studio affords such luxuries in its well-integrated world with many machines online, optimized, interconnected and interacting. This headspace can’t occur on stage unless one has the proper venue, audience, time and convenience to cross-patch multiple systems, and not to mention the means to transport such delicate equipment. Performers feed from the raw energy of an audience, the room and the sound system… but alone in the studio any palpable energy remains strictly electric as the machines take on lifeforms guided by the conductor of this electronic symphonic vessel.
